Why Electric Vehicles?

In 2001, Steve Holtom was appointed as an Advisor (on battery powered vehicles) to the China National Testing Centre. And this is where the story of AusEBike begins. Steve’s role gave him a unique opportunity to meet many of China’s 1300 electric vehicle manufacturers and assess their products. Whilst he has experience in Research & Development, Steve’s passion is for smart technology that is both environmentally friendly and supportive of sustainable living. So his interest was well and truly sparked as he examined first-hand vehicles from this new generation of transportation solution. With the specific requirements of the Australian market in mind, his assessment made the following observations:

Electric Vehicle STRENGTHS:

  • Zero Emission: Electric vehicles produce no exhaust to pollute the air, and they usually produce very little noise
  • Low purchase cost: The large number of manufacturers and readily available labour ensures that the vehicles are available both cheaply and in many variations – there’s lots of choice!
  • Low operating costs: Both the running and maintenance costs for an electric vehicle are very low.
  • Readily available: The large number and competitiveness of the manufacturers means that electric vehicles are easily purchased on the internet, either through online auctions or directly from the overseas supplier.
  • No License or Registration required: Australia’s regulations for road use classify a bicycle with a small motor as an ordinary bicycle. So a bicycle with a motor (whose output does not exceed 200 watts) can be ridden on the road without license or registration. This makes this form of transport a viable alternative for those that can’t afford a first car, a second car or just don’t have their license.

Electric Vehicle WEAKNESSES:

  • Poor quality: Very competitive manufacturers use cheap components and cheap assembly to provide a cheap product – with cheap quality too!
  • No product support: Many suppliers do not provide any support if the product doesn’t work – it is no longer their problem!
  • Illegal or unsuitable products: Many vehicles are supplied with chargers that are not Australian Standards Approved. And some suppliers don’t think it’s their problem to let you know that it is illegal to ride your vehicle on the road.
  • Dangerously poor performance: The 200 watt limit for electric bicycles means that many are “gutless” and almost dangerous in traffic.
  • False performance claims: The performance claims made by some suppliers are “unbelievably” good for a 200 watt vehicle – but if you buy online, you only find out when the product arrives.
