Electric Bicycle Legislation

So what's the story with electric bicycle legislation?
Why can you ride them on the road without a license or registration?
How does that work?

Since 1998, Australian legislation has exempted this type of vehicle from requiring registration. The legislation refers to them as "motor assisted pedal cycles". So long as the vehicle is a bicycle, it may have a small motor attached. If this motor's output does not exceed 200 watts, the vehicle does not require registration.

All of the road rules regarding bicycles still apply, including:
1. You must wear a bicycle helmet when riding on the road
2. As with any bicycle, you should not ride on the footpath unless 12 years or under (or accompanying a child under 12yo)

See the NSW RTA information sheet

See Paragraph 15 Part 2 Schedule 1 of the Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Regulation 1998

Whilst AusEBike makes every effort to ensure that their motor assisted pedal cycles are legal to ride, please ensure that you check with your local authorities as some local councils may have specific rules regarding this type of vehicle.
